Diet Coke drinkers might be pretty excited to find out Coca-Cola has come out with a new diet soda that they say will actually âimproveâ your health. Itâs called Coca-Cola Plus, and itâs pretty much just like Diet Coke, but it has five-grams of fiber added. And thatâs what they claim makes it the healthiest soda around.
We should probably mention that right now, itâs only available in Japan. But this new diet soda claims to reduce the amount of fat your body absorbs from food. SO theyâre basically saying if you drink Coke Plus with a junk food meal, it makes the junk food less harmful to you.
And if that seems too good to be true, thatâs because it is. As Harvard nutritional biochemist Shawn Talbott says, âthere is no such thing as a healthy soda.â This is just marketing thatâs trying to distract you from how unhealthy your soda is by focusing on the healthy ingredient - the fiber. But there are only five-grams in the drink, which isnât much of the 30 grams women need a day.
"Is Coke Plus better than no fiber?,â he says. âSure, but not much better, and I certainly wouldn't consider it to be 'healthy,' especially when you're drinking it in the form of a super-sweet beverage.â
So if youâre looking to add five-grams of fiber to your diet, youâre better off just eating an apple. Itâs got the fiber and a bunch of vitamins and minerals too. And it really is a health food â with no artificial sweeteners or additives.
